چکیده

763 Vostok, and are located relatively close to it (Bell et al, 2006). “The size and origin of the two recently discovered large subglacial lakes suggest that these lakes are tectonically controlled. In contrast to the smaller and shallower lakes, tectonically controlled subglacial lakes are deep and quite old,” said Studinger. “The tectonic control and longevity of these lakes suggests that they probably host a diverse ecosystem.” The idea that subglacial lakes are interconnected by a hydrological network beneath the ice has existed for some time, but evidence to prove it was not available until now, Studinger added. He noted that the work by Duncan Wingham and others showed that these linkages exist, and that the flux of water beneath large continental ice sheets can be relatively fast and voluminous. “Model predictions of future sea-level rise have to take into account the lubricating effects of subglacial water on ice sheet stability and drainage, and the possible influx of large volumes of fresh water into the ocean,” said Studinger.

The embryology of Ailanthus altissima (Simaroubaceae): an invasive species from Iran

Simaroubaceae is a monophyletic family in the order Sapindales with 22 genera and 109 species. Ailanthus altissima (Mill) Swingle, also known as the tree of heaven, is a highly invasive species, which systematically belongs to Simaroubaceae. Reproductive characteristics are essential for the deployment and maintenance of invasive species in new environments and examination of the reproductive s...

The Definitions of Species and Clade Names: A Reply to Ghiselin

Ghiselin (1993) has criticized my proposal (de Queiroz 1992) that phylogenetic definitions of taxon names (de Queiroz and Gauthier 1990) provide a means of reconciling the position that taxa are individuals (composite wholes) with the traditional method of defining taxon names in terms of necessary and sufficient properties (intensional definitions), which implies that taxa are classes. As Ghis...

Evolutionary Dynamics of Complete Campylobacter Pan-Genomes and the Bacterial Species Concept

Defining bacterial species and understanding the relative cohesiveness of different components of their genomes remains a fundamental problem in microbiology. Bacterial species tend to be comprised of both a set of core and dispensable genes, with the sum of these two components forming the species pan-genome. The role of the core and dispensable genes in defining bacterial species and the ques...

Limitations of hypothesis-testing in defining management units for continuously distributed species

Estimating the risk to wildlife populations resulting from human-induced mortality relies on adequately defining population structure. For marine populations, including cetaceans, identifying population boundaries is difficult because most species have large continuous distributions with no obvious barriers to dispersal. For many species, the extreme ends of the range differ in morphology, indi...

Species concepts and malaria parasites: detecting a cryptic species of Plasmodium.

Species of malaria parasite (phylum Apicomplexa: genus Plasmodium) have traditionally been described using the similarity species concept (based primarily on differences in morphological or life-history characteristics). The biological species concept (reproductive isolation) and phylogenetic species concept (based on monophyly) have not been used before in defining species of Plasmodium. Plasm...

Phylogeny and genetic diversity of Fusarium graminearum species complex associated with Fusarium head blight of wheat in Moghan plain (Iran)

Thirty-seven isolates of Fusarium graminearum species complexobtained from wheat heads with Fusarium head blight symptoms were selected and used for phylogenetic studies. They were collected from different localities of Moghan plain (Ardebil province, Iran). Partial sequences of translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF), putative reductase (RED) and UTP-ammonia ligase (URA) genes were amplifi...
